Protest Tactics 🇿🇼
1) Organisation
Let’s not base your protest around a certain leader, they will attack the person to kill the soul of the protest. The protest is for the people by the people. Do not wear any party regalia...this is a national issue not a battle between parties.
2) Communication
Behave like swarm of bees
Our protest has no person as the center of the protest coordination is key
Use VPN incase they shut the internet
End to end encrypted messages only (WhatsApp inbox, Telegram)
Share protest information by Bluetooth or SHAREit
3) Information:
Share location of police&soldiers,
time&venue, evasion tactics, coordinate what to bring to protests, discuss things with guardians, lawyers. Make sure someone you trust knows your whereabouts. Disclose government secret operatives to avoid leakage of information
4) Philosophy:
#BeWater : Behave like a flowing fluid, keep the protest moving, don’t stay in one place, pop up spontaneously at Government buildings & disperse before the police come. Be ready to change direction quickly. Use portable bricks to slow down security vehicles
5) Privacy
Wear a mask to cover your identity
Wear a hoodie, shades or cap 🧢
Cover surveillance cameras with umbrellas as you approach them then cover them with coloured sellotape or spray paint
6) Protection
Wear something to cover your head from falling or button sticks
Improvise on shields, bin lids, banners, broken doors, roof sheets
Wear gloves 🧤 incase you have to throwback a teargas canister: It’s hot
Wear glasses too for pepper spray & carry a towel & water
7) Teargas Management
Cover your airways with bandanas, masks, scarfs. Wear gloves, cover as much skin as possible. Carry water to rinse. Don’t wear oily makeup. Extinguish teargas by covering in a traffic cone / cut 2 litre bottle & pour water over it...or throw it back
8) Evasion Tactics
Know police formations, escape routes and alleyways to change course. Identify water sources early in the protest, offer safe haven to protesters if you can. If the protests last until dark, use torches (or laser pointers) 🔦 to blind the police.
9) Coordination
Use umbrellas to conceal your activities
Burn tyres in front of government offices to irritate obscure their vision & move to the next area immediately after. Help if you have masks, tyres to burn, transport, water. Fastest way to light a fire: Molotov cocktail
10) Transport
Use mass transit to quickly move around, those guys have years of evading police. Carry your tyres as “spare tyres” in commuter omnibuses. Allow ambulances 🚑 safe passage.
11) Medical care
Nurses, doctors, people with first aid knowledge treat people during the protests. Security forces will be going around to hospitals. Offer your help, write it on placards that you can help. People should bring any medical supplies they can( painkillers, betadine)
12) Protests are never easy, people will get injured or die. Be mentally prepared to protest for months on end. Educate each other on policy so we get the reforms we want. Call out those who prop up the regime;companies, church leaders, media personalities, artists, professionals
13) Everyone likes security, unity&peace but we need to separate protection from oppression. Police&soldiers have decided to follow orders at the expense of the economy & yet they are victims too. Let it sink in that they are not on our side & we need to treat them so everywhere.
