This is the work of Japanese photographer Yoshiyuki Iwase (1904-2001). Yoshiyuki was born in in Onjuku, a fishing village on the pacific side of the Chiba peninsula, near Tokyo Bay. He spent his career photographing the ama free divers, women who fished along the coast.

Yoshiyuki studied law at Meiji University & graduated in 1924. He was heir to the family sake distillery, but was determined to document the receding traditions of the coastal Japan where he grew up.
In the late 1920s, Yoshiyuki received a Kodak camera as a gift and he started to photograph the girls and women who harvested seaweed, turban shells, oysters, pearls and abalone from along the coastline.

This is Mah Laqa Bai (1768-1824), born Chanda Bibi, (also known as Mah Laqa Chanda). She was an Indian Urdu poet, courtesan, warrior and philanthropist. She was the first female poet in India to have a diwan (collection of poems) published.

She was born in Aurangabad, present-day Maharashtra. Her mother was called Raj Kunwar and was a courtesan from Rajputana. Her father was a military official at Mughal Emperor Muhammad Shah's court.
Chanda Bibi was adopted by her maternal aunt, Mehtaab Ma, who was a famous courtesan and mistress to Nawab Rukn-ud-Daula, a Prime Minister and Nizam of Hyderabad.

She was a legendary dancer and singer. She spoke many languages fluently & recorded more than 600 records between 1902 and 1920, in Bengali, Gujarati, Tamil, Marathi, Arabic, Persian, Pushto, French, and English.
She raised money for the Swaraj Fund to support the freedom movement. Gandhi asked her to organise a fund-raising concert, she agreed on the condition that he would attend the event. When Gandhi didn’t turn up, she only sent him half of the earnings
