I've always thought that what's missing in News is the sort of iterative publish/confirm/disprove/refine cycle that happens with science.
I don't know if this cuts it but I do agree that engagement should not proxy for News. That's where social media went wrong. ...1/2
Another possibility is to select for processes, not whether a fact has been confirmed or not, because that will bias old news that has had more time to get confirmed. Which can take months.
Processes = does the News shop follow proper journalistic practice = trust points.
To be clear, using the processes standard, imho credible orgs like WaPo, CNN, AP would come out on top, news orgs like Fox News that often skip context would not.
