All cause excess mortality is the most accurate pandemic measure... so how are the states doing? Here's the latest from CDC.

First: worse than the national total.
Now, better than the national total.

Note that less than 100% excess deaths means all-cause deaths are lower than in a typical year.
That 102% nationally means we're at 26K excess deaths. Now there's some lag, but that still means a lot of the dashboard COVID death count are people CDC expected to die anyway.
