God, am I so happy that @edyong209 wrote this. Many of us from the AIDS era (not over!) have PTSD from it. All the deaths, the needless suffering. And here we go again. 1/ theatlantic.com/health/archive…
So, show some love to your epidemiologists, disease modelers, infection control experts. There's a lot of punching down on this platform. Public health people aren't in a lucrative profession, with lots of power and influence. We just try to do our jobs with what we've got. 2/
We don't get it right all of the time, we make mistakes, but perhaps think twice about your next hot-take, your next scolding of a public health person, your next talking down to someone who has studied epidemics all their lives. 3/
I'm less worried about me. I've seen the worst days of the AIDS epidemic. I've learned to tune out the politicos, the egomaniacs, the profiteers who always show up in a crisis. But if you've just started out in this profession, or not been up close to a pandemic, it's hard. 4/
So, to everyone here who works in public health, in public health departments, in universities, in think-tanks, in the words of Prior Walter at the end of Angels in America: "You are fabulous creatures, each and every one. And I bless you: More Life. The Great Work Begins." 5/
