The Chief of Infectious Diseases @mgh_id @RWalensky and Professor at @YaleHPM & @YaleSOM @ADPaltiel just came out with a paper every college student, professor, staff member and administrator should read, now, right now. Are you ready to re-open? 1/ medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
Question: What SARS-CoV-2 screening and isolation program will keep U.S. residential college students safe and permit the reopening of campuses? 2/
Findings: Frequent screening (every 2 or 3 days) of all students with a low-sensitivity, high-specificity test will control outbreaks with manageable isolation dormitory utilization at a justifiable cost. 3/
Meaning: Campuses can safely reopen in the Fall 2020 but success hinges on frequent screening and uncompromising, continuous attention to basic prevention and behavioral interventions to reduce the baseline severity of transmission. 4/
You can do two things right now: find holes in the analysis and come up with your own screening protocol, or, get on the phone to your university presidents and trustees and read them the paper aloud. 5/
I don't think that any college, perhaps except @Harvard has said they'll even attempt something like this. Which means, if @RWalensky and @ADPaltiel are right, re-openings in the fall are destined to lead to outbreaks of #SARSCOV2. 6/
If you know your university's screening protocol and frequency, let me know here. This info is crucial for everyone to know, students, parents, faculty, staff, community members where these institutions are based. If colleges aren't testing enough it's bad for everyone. 6/
