The Seattle Mayor’s Seattle Transportation Benefit District renewal plan is out today. Here’s the details and TCC’s thoughts (1/16)

STBD will expire at the end of 2020. This measure has drastically expanded service and brought a 10 min walk to 10 min service to 70% of households in Seattle, along with other affordability & equity programs. It was approved by 62% of the vote. (2/16) seattle.gov/Documents/Depa…
I-976 passed last year which now restricts Seattle’s ability to put vehicle license fees back to voters, and reduces STBD funds by nearly 50%. Seattle voters rejected I-976 by nearly 76% of the vote. (3/16)
The STBD renewal transmitted today would maintain a 0.1% sales tax and is anticipated to generate $20-$30M annually over 6 years to fund transit service, capital projects, and transit access programs like ORCA Opportunity (free ORCA cards to @SeaPubSchools students). (4/16)
The renewal proposal centers around these five priorities: (5/16)
TCC THOUGHTS: Transit is a vital service that needs investments - TCC is glad to see support for renewal of the STBD. Continuation of vital transit investments is critical for the health and future of Seattle (during COVID-19, the economic recovery, and beyond). (6/16)
Transit is critical for creating affordability during this challenging economic climate. The cost of car maintenance is expensive, and we need transit to be accessible for those who need it most. (Image from WSTC) (7/16)
If we disinvest in transit now, the consequences will be devastating for generations to come. Seattle must keep investing and connecting communities to opportunity, especially low-income communities and communities of color. (8/16)
This package is a bridge toward the ultimate goal - re-regionalize transit funding in King County - and will help bolster transit service during this difficult time. (9/16)
Re-regionalizing service is critical to building a frequent and reliable regional transit network that also aligns with light rail openings. (10/16) seattletransitblog.com/2020/02/27/now…
Inherent in our support for STBD, is our continued intention and commitment to supporting re-regionalizing transit funding through this process. (11/16)
The passage of 976 left gov'ts w/fewer tools to generate transit funding & it's an unfortunate reality that sales tax, the only remaining tool, is regressive. This proposal attempts to balance the regressive nature of sales tax & the funding needed to keep transit moving (12/16)
The larger issues about how we fund our transpo system remain. TCC is committed to finding progressive/sustainable revenue sources that don’t burden low income communities. We are leading a coalition working to re-imagine transpo funding in #WA. (13/16) transportationchoices.org/transportation…
The current STBD renewal policy is designed to be flexible to meet Seattle's needs and there’s time to further design and develop the policy. We will work with the City Council, transit equity workgroup and partners to get to our health, equity, and access goals. (14/16)
Here's a chance to weigh in! City Council will discuss the Seattle Transportation Benefit District later this week. We will send details once it's posted. (15/16)
Have thoughts about the package? Comment below, we would love to hear your thoughts. (16/16)
