LONG THREAD. my Bassnectar story & how it affected me.please RT & share on other networks b/c despite being a "legend" i dont have a lot followers here or on FB. my ordeal with Lorin is yet another reason why you haven't seen new releases or me at events. #BlackTransLivesMatter
yesterday i learned about the allegations against Bassnectar. my heart breaks for every one of the women (girls at the time) that have been traumatized by what they described (2/25)
reading through their accounts hurt me for two reasons 1) i have my own Bassnectar story not involving these allegation which shows how he little regard he had for one women and her work as well as how hard it was to even get through to him. (3/25)
2) having recently opened up about Carlos "DJ SoulSlinger" sexually assaulting me in the back of a car while he owned the record label i was signed to it hit me hard to see yet another "icon" of the electronic dance music world become a predator. (4/25)
i first learned of Bassnectar in late 2010 when a fan posted a video with his song "Here We Go" whose title was taken from a phrase my MC, MC Sphinx (Hossam El Saie) shouted over top my track "5 A.M. Rinse" on my first album...(5/25)
which Lorin (Bassnectar) heavily sampled and timestretched for the intro and hook of "Here We Go" which appeared on his 2010 release "Timestretch": whosampled.com/sample/103220/…. this when he was still developing his sound which borrowed heavily from mine by his own admission. (6/25)
what followed was 5 years of frustration for me trying to reach him. i was ultimately ready to give up when someone suggested an entertainment attorney (i could barely afford) might have more success. (7/25)
when he finally got in touch he swore he had been looking for me "for years" despite my Facebook page having been around since 2007 and my website predating both featuring contact details. (8/25)
Heather, my attorney suggested we take what was offered, $5625, some of which went to pay her. i was also promised royalties which i never received. (9/)
i was already in poverty at this point but had Lorin really valued my work in 2010 and its contribution to his success, i likely would be in a very different situation now in 2020. (10/25)
instead he, a white cisgender male got to benefit for years off of the work of me, a black transgender female, all while he was doing things which by his own admission caused hurt to other women: rollingstone.com/music/music-ne… (11/25)
he never offered anything other than things which mostly would have benefited him. notice the suggestion for a collaboration is "how about we find something of *yours* and rework it" suggesting i do the majority of the work which he would have benefited more than me. (12/25)
not once did he say "jordana i know you're not doing well financially, let's try to get you back out there you influenced my sound, why don't we tour together you can open for me"or anything like that. it was just finding another way to exploit me and my music for his gain.(13/25)
it didn't stop there though, he seemed to want to continue exploiting me asking for vocals in exchange for a remix/collab in which *i* did most of the work. he talked about making a blog post about me (which never happened) (14/25)
i write this for further evidence of how he treated at least one woman in the music industry he claims to have been influenced by but in reality he ripped off, avoided and devalued. (15/25)
this ordeal plus the sexual assault by Soulslinger and the hate crime in Ohio, my dire financial situation as well as having very little in the way of followers, plays, likes, etc have all made it very difficult for me emotionally to work on music or perform at events. (16/25)
imagine if the thing you used to escape pain, hurt and depression BECAME the source of it as a result of these events in your life.this is what i mean when i say i have to be right mentally, physically & creatively to come back but at least i've started working towards that.(17/25)
the electronic dance music scene has had a problem with high profile men sexually abusing and exploiting women in other ways and most have been reluctant to come forward out of fear. (18/25)
fear kept me from revealing details of the sexual assault by Carlos "Soulslinger" for 20 years: facebook.com/JordanaOfficia… (19/25)
it's good that Bassnectar has left music. perhaps it's a good time for the industry to take a long look at the environment which fosters the abuses which happen within it. (20/25)
furthermore, in this time in which many are talking about diversity, the lack of diversity among headliners at large festivals should be discussed and steps taken to remedy it .i'm sure there will be many people considered for filling Bassnectar's vacancy. (21/25)
i'd implore those with the decision making power in booking agencies, festival promoters/organizers and artist management to cast a wider net.mixmag.net/read/kevin-sau… (22/25)
Bassnectar's replacement may not be white, male, straight or cisgender but just as capable of dropping bass as heavy as anything he's done. she may have been in front of you all along, you just "didn't know how to reach her". (23/25)
when you see my past works for sale on Amazon,iTunes,Spotify, etc i do not make a dime off of it. Carlos, the man who put his hand up my skirt and grabbed my genitals back in the 90s does. The industry couldn't care less about that AFAIK Soulslinger hasn't been cancelled (24/25)
having faced sexual assault by a label owner who still profits off of my work,a hate crime which left half my face numb & Bassnectar who ripped off one of my tracks it's a wonder i am even still here. hoping the women who Bassnecter hurt receive justice because i haven't (25)
