Today, the Supreme Court ruled Trump isn’t above the law. “Temporary presidential immunity” isn’t legitimate and Trump’s financial records can be subpoenaed.

SCOTUS also ruled that Congressional subpoenas of Trump’s financial records could be enforceable.

BUT:
The decisions validate Trump’s delay tactics.

In cases related to House Dems’ investigations, SCOTUS ruled that lower courts did not adequately consider the separation of powers issues involved. It’ll go back to the lower courts for a balancing test.

In Vance, related to the Manhattan prosecutor subpoenaing Trump’s financial records, the case will also go back to the lower courts where Trump can raise more arguments.

Trump’s financial records are unlikely to be released before the November election.
“The Supreme Court correctly rejected Donald Trump’s ahistorical and anti-constitutional argument that the presidency gives him absolute immunity from accountability,” said our executive director @AREvers.
“No president is above the law, but these decisions unfortunately validate the president’s delay tactics."
"Sooner or later the public will get the full story of President Trump’s financial dealings, but we once again have to ask why he has gone to such extreme lengths to conceal it.”
The president’s attempts to block Mazars from releasing the records are in keeping with his multiple years of thwarting legislative oversight and ducking accountability — and getting federal agencies to assist in those efforts.
We’ve been investigating the IRS’s handling of audits of Trump or VP Pence. In fall 2019, an IRS whistleblower complaint alleged that a Treasury political appointee may have tried to interfere with the IRS’s annual audits of Trump or Pence. A Senate investigation followed.
We filed FOIA requests with the IRS and Treasury seeking communications and directives about the IRS audit of Trump and Pence. We’re investigating if anyone has put pressure on career IRS officials or interfered with the audit.

Today’s rulings highlight the importance of independent oversight. We will continue to use public records requests to uncover the truth and hold our leaders accountable to the public.
