Pinboard is 11 years old today, and I'm trying to figure out where the blog went so I can brag about it. Hooray for Pinboard!

At the time I started the site, charging for a product or service online was a concept so alien I had to constantly defend it

The gist of it, there's an awful lot of them, they are chronically underfunded, the fundraising climate this year is particularly hard (because you can't do in-person events), and the impact of state legislatures in a census year when districts are redrawn can't be overstated
Let's take Florida as an example! Republicans have held a majority there for 20 years. That means that they have coasted through ten elections in a row where the Republican house majority is re-elected. In the 2014 election, a third of Florida house seats weren't contested!

We have very strong evidence by now that a major driver of covid spread is superspreading events indoors, at some distance from the spreader, but proximity at the arbitrary 2 meter distance is still being treated like a talisman against infection six months into this disaster.
This fixation on six-foot social distancing as magic makes people both too risk-averse (you don't have to panic that someboody walked by you outside) and too accepting of risk (senators not masking up because they're more than 6 feet apart in a crowded, unventilated indoor space)
Knowing nothing at all about the disease or how it spreads at first, you would expect practical advice about it to change over time as we learned more. But that hasn't happened. The advice is stuck in the same place as in March, with only the welcome addition of mask wearing

Since I've been fundraising so hard and flogging people with the imminent June 30 deadline, let me recap what the Great Slate is about, and why we're backing these specific campaigns. Basically, we're trying to build in election insurance for close Senate races. Here's a thread!
In ALASKA, a medical doctor is running as a first-timer in the Senate race against incumbent Dan Sullivan. While Gross is a political newcomer, he's the son of a famous figure in Alaska politics. He's also rich, so we're not fundraising for him directly.
But because Alaska only has a single Congressional seat, the House race there is also statewide. Alyse Galvin, who we backed in 2018, is now polling just *ahead* of Don Young, the longest-serving congressman. Whatever votes she can bring in will also be votes for Gross.
