Hi, I’ll be live-tweeting today's meeting of the Commission on Chicago Landmarks by the Chicago Department of Planning and Development for #ChiDocumenters@CHIdocumenters
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 12:45pm, will be held virtually, and can be viewed by the public at vimeo.com/434406163
The meeting began on time. There is one public comment by a Mr. Miller, from @Pres_Chicago, who is recommending the Schlitz House on the East Side to be designated as a Chicago landmark.
The DPD report on the former Schlitz Brewery-Tied House begins. Commissioner Cox gives the history of the building, citing its function in alcohol distribution during the Prohibition Era.
Cox says the purpose of this plan "is to provide a clear vision of how the port should develop through 2050 to realize its full economic potential." He said the landmark designation supports the city's overall planning goals.
The Commission moves to accept the DPD's report and take the next step in designating the (former) Schlitz-Tied House as a Chicago landmark.
The next DPD report by Commissioner Cox is on the Perkins-Nordine House, which is one of the last remaining large scale residences in the Edgewater neighborhood. Spoken word artist Ken Nordine lived there from 1951-2019.
Since 2003, 18 single family homes have been demolished in Edgewater, due in large part to high-density zoning in the area. Ald. Osterman has expressed wanting to see the remaining single family homes remain.
Cox says landmark designation of the Perkins-Nordine House supports the city's planning and governing standards. The Commission votes to accept the DPD report and move forward with landmark designation.
The next presentation is by Emily Barton, on a proposed restoration to the already landmarked Chicago Cultural Center at 78 East Washington Street. All replacement materials will be reviewed by Historic Restoration staff.
The Grand Army of the Republic rooms were designated for veterans of the Civil War who fought on the side of the Union. The original decorative colors and bronze were painted over in the 1970s.
Pictured below are the room in its original state (left) and painted over (right).
The Commission approves the DPD's report on the Chicago Cultural Center and moves to go forward on renovations.
The next presentation is a proposal to move the Vautravers Building 29 feet to the west to accommodate a @cta plan to modernize the Red and Purple Lines.
To move it, the building will be "jacked up on beams and rolled to its new location." The support beams are highlighted in yellow below. The presenter says the relocation will not have an adverse effect on the area.
The Commission votes in favor of moving forward with relocating the Vautravers Building, and is requesting the staff to update the boundary changes for the plan.
Larry Shure gives a report on projects reviewed by the committee in the month of June. He says there are less applications coming in overall.
The meeting is adjourned at 2:33pm.
