One homeless guy who've I've been friends with for a decade has changed his mind about another guy who I've only known for about 6 months. #1 thinks I should evict #2 from outside my door once named "The Foundation of the Lord". (long story)
#1 is upset that #2 gets more money each month AND he panhandles. It is a source of pride to #1 that he doesn't panhandle.
#1 is upset that #2 steals from the local stores. His father taught him that being a thief and a liar are wrong. I've known #1 to lie and steal very regularly and he is banned from many local stores for stealing.
#1 is quite sure #2 is going to expire right here on the Foundation of the Lord. #1 counsels me that this would not be a good look for the church, to have him die right here. #1 has tried to end his own life in this exact same spot.
#1 complains that #2's drug dealers come up onto the foundation to sell him drugs. I've seen #1 buy and use drugs for years in that very same spot.
#1 shares that he's losing patience with me for having patience with #2. He tells me (in his therapeutic speak) "you've got to enforce some boundaries here..." Many in the neighborhood over the years have said this to me about #1
#1 made a variety of good points, but the display of self-righteous self-blindness was both amusing and simply stunning to me. I'm sure this is how I appear to God with many of my grievances against my neighbors.
