According to the US Dept. of Health & Human Services, in 2017, 51% of child abuse victims were girls and 49% boys. What this means is, roughly 1/2 the victims and survivors we encounter will be male. This underreported stat should drastically alter how we ID and help victims.
Here's another underreported stat.

54% of perpetrators were women, and 45% were men. The rest were unknown.

Abusers don't look like who we think they look like. Don't miss or ignore a red flag because you're looking for a stereotyped predator.
77.6% of perpetrators were the victim's own parents.
74.9% of victims suffered neglect
18.3% suffered physical abuse
8.6% suffered sexual abuse
5.7% suffered psychological maltreatment
2.2% suffered medical neglect
7.1% experienced “other” maltreatment, which may include verbal threats or parental substance abuse.
Nearly three-quarters (71.8%) of children who died due to child abuse or neglect were younger than 3 years old.
Most victims were from three races or ethnicities: White (44.6%), Hispanic (22.3%), and African-American (20.7%).
American Indian or Alaska Native children had the highest rates of victimization at 14.3 per 1,000 children in the population of the same race or ethnicity, and African American children had the second-highest rate at 13.9 per 1,000 children of the same race or ethnicity.
In 2017, CPS agencies received an estimated 4.1 million referrals involving the alleged maltreatment of approximately 7.5 million children. The national referral rate is 55.7 referrals per 1,000 children in the population.
Of these referrals, approximately 2.4 million reports
concerning 3.5 million children received CPS response. The national rate for children receiving either an investigation or alternative response was 47.1 children per 1,000 in the population.

Keep in mind, the 14/1000 type stats are only the documented and verified cases. I've reported my dad, and other situations of abuse, but when CPS investigated they found nothing and did nothing. So, these stats represent the worst and most glaringly obvious crisis situations.
