We are living in a time of history where there only way to survive is to make the most out of the list. These means proper land utilization, land rehabilitation and economical solutions.

To benefit from manufacturering your own feed for poultry you have to think smart.

1. Scale of production - the larger the scale the more economical, if your capacity is small it will be smart to join hands with other small producers to make it economical viable.

2. Availability of local raw material: If the receipe you are using have soya as food sorce but locally you have fish meal or meat and blood meal from slaughter houses, it will be smart to use the localy available raw material. Send samples to lab for crude protein analysis.

Land/space: in the scarcity of land it makes more sense to have a feeding solution that will not require larger parcels of lands

Example : when using soya as protein sorce we will require large parcels of land but when using black soldier flies larvae space is nolonger an issue

Palatability: this means the feed can be readily consumed after grinding and is digestible without futher processing/ no anti nutrients

Let compare fish meal, soya, maize & black soldier flies larvae.
Maize, larvae and fish meal are palatable but soya require cooking/baking

Soya require further processing yo get the palatable soya meal. The process starts with dehulling, baking and finaly oil extrusion using high pressure extruder machine which can be very handy but also expensive but worth it. Extrusion remove excess oil

Diversity: It is normally required not to have a single raw material that you are totally dependent on to the extent that incase of a shortage it will completely hinder you from making own feed.

Over reliance of corn/maize as raw material in feeds have impacted KENYA negatively

We have to think outside the box. There is no need on planting maize for animal feed just because Europe is doing so and our tropical climatic conditions are worsening with unreliable rainfalls.

It makes sense to plant pearl millet since it can be grown under harsh climate

Sustainability: if sardines is unreliable or expensive then replace it with soya, if soya isnt readily available because of certain un avoidable circumstances its time we shift to insects farming as an alternative to animal protein and oil cakes as protein source for animal feeds
