Sorry @JeromeAdamsMD @Surgeon_General , I started fighting the AIDS epidemic before you even graduated from high school. You might call our analysis of the Scott County outbreak, "armchair epidemiology," but we simply looked at the facts. @fcraw4d 1/…
And then like now, political expediency has made politicians and those who serve them, delay and defer the needed action to prevent infections and deaths. I don't care if you're the nicest guy in the room. Do your job. 2/
Indiana had an HCV outbreak in 2011. The Indiana HCV and HIV advisory bodies warned of the potential of an outbreak of HIV, asked for needle exchange to be established in the state. 3/
For god's sake, even a Republican legislator, Ed Clere, asked for this. He was the chair of the health committee--the answer was still no from the state. 4/
Yes, it wasn't just you & @VP, it was @purduemitch & your predecessor. But HIV prevention isn't rocket science & trying the folks on the coast don't understand the Midwest simply won't fly. Dan Bigg was a pioneer of harm reduction right next door to you in Illinois for years. 5/
I know @RoigFranzia was trying to do a human interest story for today's paper but I think of the 200+ people infected with HIV in Scott County, the tens of thousands dead from COVID19 on your watch. Sorry, leadership is taking responsibility, not dodging it. 6/
I've worked in the trenches of the AIDS epidemic. I know what it takes to make good policy happen. It takes courageous leaders, who do what's right, who don't just surrender to their political bosses, to advance their careers, now or then. 7/
.@VP waited until most of the infections in Scott County had happened before he acted on needle exchange, still making it hard for it to be put in place anywhere else in the state. 8/
You have both have watched the absolute insanity on #COVID19 transpire in the White House and have simply gone along to get along. You are complicit in the deaths then and now. Sorry, if the truth stings. But you've made excuses for too long for those who do the wrong thing. 9/
Do. No. Harm. That was the oath you took. Looking back, I don't think you've honored that sacred duty. Politics has been the guiding principle on HIV in Indiana and COVID19 in Washington DC. 10/
It doesn't have to be that way. Follow the example of your predecessor C. Everett Koop. He was conservative, deeply religious, but did the right thing, despite the pressure he faced. 11/…
