All those op-eds about how face-2-face learning is cognitively superior to online learning. I agree. Until you get covid-19 and your brain is (potentially) hit with neurological symptoms. Then what? ctvnews.ca/health/brain-p…
In the span of three months, we went from this is 1. respiratory 2. to this impacts multiple organs 3. to even mild symptoms can cause neurological problems. We are still figuring this out and we should apply the precautionary principle
It does look like in places where they've managed to control the virus, like really control it, you can move to open elementary/middle school. I am all for that. In the US the conditions make it impossible to even imagine that, which is ... emotionally crushing.
I went through this in grad school with a tick borne infection. My brain went to mush for a few months. Later it was just my body. Or was it the other way around? Whatever the case I don't wish it on anyway. I know those without chronic illness find it hard to relate--I get it.
But just spend some time reading, reading, watching, and watching. All sorts of videos and stories are coming out about the long haulers. Imagine yourself, your colleagues, your students. Why would you wish that upon them?

We need to bring this reality to bear with a bit more force, urgency, and clarity, and then maybe we can start to work on re-imagining what we can do (and not do) safely
