Detroit, Michigan, is one of the most influential cities in America. Recognized for its benefactions to music, art, architecture, and design, Detroit is known as the U.S. automobile industry hub, and it is also distinguished as the most populous city in Michigan.
While Detroit is a major cultural center in America, it's also classified as one of the most dangerous cities; especially notorious for violent crimes during the 1970s and 1980s. One particularly shocking example of Detroit's horrible history is the case of Robert Beckowitz.
In July of 1982, 33-year-old Robert Beckowitz was sitting with his girlfriend โ€” 27-year-old Jeannine Clark โ€” watching the television show "Benny Hill" when a man Jeannine was cheating on Beckowitz with, snuck from behind and shot Robert in the head, killing him instantly.
It was revealed that Robert Beckowitz was killed by his own friend โ€” 37-year-old James Edward Glover โ€” with one of the dozens of firearms stored in the apartment. After the murder, James Edward Glover and Jeannine Clark commenced a three-day drug-fueled necrophilic orgy.
Glover and Clark participated in defacing the corpse of Robert Beckowitz while ingesting large quantities of narcotics. While nude, the pair took numerous photographs of themselves smiling, dismembering the body with hacksaws and posing hacked body parts in demeaning positions.
The series of photographs taken during the dismemberment makes this incident one of the most well-documented cases of necrophilia. One of the pictures from the collection shows Beckowitz's head positioned on a chair with his severed hand, and his penis forced into his mouth.
By day three, Beckowitz was hardly intact physically. He was stabbed 80+ times and divided into 14 pieces, which Glover and Clark placed into trash bags after performing different sexual acts with the remains. Then, at one point, the pair was eventually caught by police.
It was initially speculated that both Clark and Glover were caught developing the film of their sadistic orgy. However, the truth began to reveal itself after Jeannie eventually broke down and contacted the police to confess every single detail about Beckowitz's murder.
It was at Beckowitz's and Clark's apartment where the police discovered Robert's dismembered remains, along with the film roll that contained the photographic evidence of the ordeal. According to Clark, Glover took her captive after murdering Beckowitz in the home.
Glover then forced Clark to consume narcotics and participate in the mutilation, which she reluctantly complied with. Despite the testimony, the film roll and statements given by the neighbors of the area painted a different picture to authorities investigating the murder.
Residents of the area leaked to local newspapers that they witnessed Jeannine leave the apartment independently several times; this includes a time when she allegedly took a trip to the store to purchase spare film for the camera they were using to document the dismemberment.
James Glover and Jeannine Clark were also seen together at a garage sale on two separate occasions. During one of these occasions, Clark was overheard screaming for Glover to allow her back inside the apartment after being locked out. Nevertheless, both were taken into custody.
James Edward Glover was charged with second-degree murder, using a firearm in the commission of a felony and mutilation of a corpse. Initially, he pleaded not guilty for mental incompetency; however, he was found competent to stand trial after being psychologically assessed.
After Glover's psychological evaluation at the Recorder's Court psychiatric clinic, he converted his plea to guilty in exchange for a deal to no life sentence. Additionally, he confessed to holding Jeannine Clark captive, and his plea deal was granted: 30-50 years in prison.
During the investigation of Robert Beckowitz's murder case, Jeannine Clark was also on parole for robbery. Despite being held captive, Jeannine was ultimately charged with the mutilation of a corpse and was sentenced to the maximum term of 80 months to 10 years in prison.
James Edward Glover's official motive for murdering Robert Beckowitz has never been made public; however, I'm sure we can speculate that Glover eliminated him for the plans he had for Jeannine after their affair. Though, until then, the truth will forever remain uncovered.
