Watching KA Education Minister @nimmasuresh announce PUC results in the state. Roughly 62% of the 685,000 students who appeared for the exams passed. Roughly 2/3, we might say. But there's a catch - 1 million students should have taken the exams, but never reached PUC level.
If we included those who never reach PUC, we will see that only 35-40% of PUC-age students in the state are clearing PUC. That is, less than half of the young people in the state are getting past the basic preparation for workforce participation that we should be aiming for.
This is not a new problem, and our way of stating results (without counting those who don't reach PUC or SSLC stage) is common across the country. It gives the misleading impression that we are doing reasonably well (60+ per cent in most cases), when in fact things are quite bad.
Ignoring this may help the department look a little better , but that's life - there are some political goals too. Nonetheless, we must do better than that for the young people of our state. We have to ask, how are ALL children of school-leaving age doing?, and start from there.
@nimmasuresh Sir, we must make a plan for this kind of change. I am sure there are many people who will gladly help the Department. I will help too if you see fit. Unless we do this today, we will condemn a very large number of young Kannadigas to needless suffering.
