Hold on, the reason All-China Women’s Federation stopped using the derogatory shengnv 剩女Term is because of my fierce criticism of them. THREAD.
As I write in my book “Leftover Women”, I believe it is no coincidence that the Women’s Federation website posted its first article on “leftover” women in 2007, shortly after China’s State Council issued its “Decision on Fully Enhancing the Population and Family Planning...
Program...to address “unprecedented population pressures.” The State Council names the sex-ratio imbalance as one of the population pressures because it “causes a threat to social stability.” It also cites the “low quality of the general population” (#LeftoverWomen p. 28)
“...which makes it hard to meet the requirements of fierce competition for national strength.” The State Council names “upgrading population quality (suzhi 素质)” as one of its key goals and appoints the Women’s Federation as one of the primary implementers...
...of its population-planning policy, along with other agencies such as Propaganda, Public Security and Civil Affairs. (#LeftoverWomen p. 29)
Local Women’s Federation branches have arranged matchmaking events for “highly educated, high-quality” women, such as an initiative in Zhejiang in 2012 for “leftover women to speedily find conjugal happiness.” Read many more examples in my book #LeftoverWomen.
After years of the relentless barrage of misogynistic propaganda, women began pushing back against the sexist nature of the “leftover women” term through social media. Consider just a tiny sample of the thousands of comments posted to my Weibo account from women across China:
“The shengnu (‘leftover women’) ideology is a rape of the hearts and minds of China’s women! China is a male chauvinist society through and through, but Chinese men are still not satisfied.” (#LeftoverWomen p. 40)
“Boycott! Marriage is over! Much better to buy yourself a home, get somebody’s sperm and raise a child rather than wait on a man!”
“Can’t women have the right to choose our own way of life? Why must a woman who chooses to be single be vilified by all of society?” (See many more examples in my book)
In December 2012, a woman tweeted on Weibo the Chinese translation of a New York Times op-ed I wrote, which criticized the Women’s Federation propagation of the term “leftover” women. She tagged the Women’s Federation Weibo account and attached the following comment to my op-ed:
“More and more, I believe in the saying, ‘the Women’s Federation is an evil organization.’ That woman’s comment (along with my op-ed) was retweeted many hundreds of times, until the Women’s Federation website suddenly - with no explanation or apology - deleted its columns...
...stigmatizing “leftover” women. This marked a minor victory for feminist activists on social media, and at the time I was hopeful that the “leftover” women media campaign might be coming to an end.
I later heard from a UN Women representative in Beijing that their office had spoken directly with counterparts at All-China Women’s Federation and said the agency had a real problem with sexism, so the Federation began new training programs to improve their image.
OF COURSE by 2014, the Women's Federation had already gone through training about how they're losing support among young women by using the "leftover" women term and other sexist practices, so you have all these examples in the thread by Xinhua reporter:
