Cold night, slept in a strange position, back stiff next day, then back muscle locked up. Couldn't move my neck except at the waist.
Rx for Soma + Vicodin, open for as many refills as I wanted.
Except I drank a lot
Starting at 5pm, and passing-out at 3am (not counting lunch).
Turns out, I get a lot of work done when I'm f'd up. Best job reviews, ever, and I don't even remember what I did that year.
Problem: Drinking + Vicodin = Bad.
Vicodin is Hydrocodone, cut with Acetaminophen ("APAP").
Alcohol + Hydrocodone is rather pleasant.
Alcohol + Acetaminophen = Liver Failure.
Pharma seldom tests drugs on drunk rats.
SAFE!*
*except for guys who drink like bachelors.
APAP needs one of those same enzymes to be broken down.
APAP always wins, leaving the alcohol in an interim stage between it and sugar (ie, paint thinner).
Acute Liver Death is usually fatal, but I'm of mostly Scottish descent,
I saw a 60 Minutes' piece about APAP + alcohol (guy took Tylenol™ for a hangover. 4 days later, liver transplant).
15 yrs later, my app'x blew out
Last form I filled out before the operation, under Allergies, I put "NO TYLENOL!!!".
I woke up with a morphine drip, and one pill 4x/day.
My liver hurt.
And I wasn't getting better, I was making the nurses nervous.
I had to ask a nurse if the pills had Tylenol in them (4x). Never got a straight answer from her, but she alerted the doctor, who figured out that I drank
Six days in the hospital for an app'y. You can guess how much the bill came to, but only by tripling your first guess.
Turns out that APAP is the #1 US cause of Acute Liver Failure.
