I actually missed Sullivan snarking about Weiss having committed "thoughtcrimes."

Many of us have observed that we have a Twitter troll as president, but I think we've neglected the degree to which even sinecured "public intellectuals" have come to reflect the worst memeing.
Discourses about the "PC police" are at least as old as I am. But the rhetoric about is increasingly drifting towards YouTube comment quality.
I remember thinking that when Trump whinged about "cancel culture" in his July 4th speech that it was Extremely Online, even for him. Then, not days later, this clique comes out with their open letter, and then these performative resignations come in...
They are *really* trying to make 'fetch' happen with an idea that, frankly, most Americans don't know or care about. But in so doing, they are helping Trump convert an Extremely Online meme into something that may have traction with Republican voters.
I'm not suggesting that helping Trump was their intention. They're entirely too self-centred to even consider that possibility. But these efforts, in the midst of a worldwide crisis of staggering proportions, remain baffling and selfish.
