Kariuki--formerly a Mau Mau detainee--was the leading spokesman for Kenya's poor. 'I firmly believe that substituting Kamau for Smith, Odongo for James & 1/3
Kiplagat for Keith does not solve what the gallant fighters of our Uhuru considered an undesirable injustice', he wrote.
Kariuki had been Kenyatta's private secretary; in 1969, as his popularity grew, he was made Ass. Agriculture Minister. Here he is at a rally in Ngong.
In the 1974 election he was returned to Parliament with the largest majority in the country.
He was murdered--likely with Kenyatta's knowledge--on 1 March 1975. A committee appointed by Parliament interviewed 123 people but reached no conclusions concerning his death.
