This is extraordinary exchange cuts to the heart of what is so wrong about the direction DiAngelo, Kendi and others are taking us. It is simply antithetical to the way many black people conceive of themselves and their dignity:
A black teenage father who now works in racial equity tried to talk about accountability and the danger of telling kids they're not responsible for themselves. Anti-racism coach *shuts him down.* All racial disparity is racism, the instructor insists. Anything else is a "detour."
Anyway, I'm probably going to be quote-tweeting about this profile of Robin Diangelo for a few days, so bear with me.
The man being shut down, like a friend I was just speaking with, knows this is wrong. Teaching kids to see themselves as members of "communities" defined by skin who inherit collective "histories" that then position them as permanent victims who must spend their only lives 1/
on earth rehashing past conflicts and petitioning whites, who are all powerful, to care and repent for their privileges, all while everyone can only ever express their set "group" characteristics and traits. As my friend said, "It's completely obscene." 2/
