Heard that both Wal-Mart & Target are instituting mandatory masking. The marketplace is both our god & our government.
So I tried to tweet w/out a thread & it looks like I can't. Lol. If it's unclear, I was struck by the fact that we have to rely on the marketplace to enforce common good policies that govt(s) can't or won't.
Tracing this down, I suppose you could consider boycotts & purchasing to be a form of voting. Obviously, this is a seriously flawed way to govern a society.
Curious to see how this all plays out. As govts prove themselves ineffective to battle Covid, will corporate policy become governing order?
As each business, workplace, & school crafts their own policy expectations for staff, customers, & students, these guidelines become the governing force in individual's life. Many govts are only giving guidelines; corporate policies are enforceable by restricting access to org.
It's a fascinating conundrum. Those who resist state mandates claiming individual rights will still encounter mandates. Access to common life will be regulated. The loss is that corporate mandates will come from board rooms instead of elected officials accountable to public.
