CPD THREAD: I’ve been talking to a couple of people about how we moved our CPD online and thought I’d share in case it was useful.
Our aims:
- Flexible, personalised, high quality CPD
- Support new staff induction
- Complement face-to-face training
First, we built a CPD Portal
The portal was built through Google sites & was really easy to set up. It’s split into sections including pedagogy, using Google & Excel, subject knowledge, external courses, lesson videos, training requests. The images only show a few subjects, there is a page for every subject
When you click on a page, it takes you to training courses you can choose from. Some link to online training, others take you to a Google Classroom. We use our Expert Teaching principles to underpin T&L and to support induction we have an introduction to each principle through GC
Courses on Google Classroom are made by teachers or support staff based on their area of interest & expertise. We use templates and a QA model so people feel confident. This one was made by our brilliant ITT coordinator. Each session includes a video, reflection form & resources
We also have external CPD - we bought @teacherhead, @olicav @WALKTHRUs_5 course & uploaded the videos & materials to our secure site through GC. @JohnCattEd sent books to home addresses to anyone who asked to complete the course. The uptake & feedback was great - over 40 orders
We are very clear that pedagogy is to support subjects not mangle them! We have a page for subjects to upload their own CPD - subject knowledge, reading, moderation materials all go on these pages. Some subjects have completed subject knowledge audits to help curate these pages.
We have links to other external courses and a CPD library where we have curated pages for blogs, videos and books available from our CPD library with chapter references to help teachers find what they need
We also have training and coaching request forms so that we can be sure we’re offering personalised CPD for our teaching and support staff so they can tap into what they would like for their development.
Alongside our CPD we also use Powerful Action Steps which is AMAZING! It’s an instructional coaching programme by @Thecpdparadox which you use to assign small, incremental steps to improve teaching through deliberate practice. We made our own bespoke steps for our schools
You’ll see on these images we have ‘New to Turner’ steps - these are sequenced for new staff so they feel fully supported when they join us. The sequences are set based on diagnostic questions that new staff complete with their coaches - it’s all about a personalised approach
On this image you can see our ‘Novice’ sequences. These are for trainees & join up with their weekly training sessions - this also helps mentors to set precise steps for development. As it’s all recorded in one place, it also helps with reports when they’re needed
One final thing on PAS - I want to say a huge thank you to @Thecpdparadox for his patience with me and especially Ben who is my favourite IT guy - he has helped this English teacher set this up for the Trust and has been so kind and helpful the whole way through!
So this is our teaching CPD @turnerschoolsuk @TFSFolkestone. It only works because my amazing colleagues are so knowledgable & generous in making the courses & are so open to coaching & being coached. We also have a programme for leadership, but I think that’s for another day!
