Since John Lewis has been near death for months, any ordinary White House would have had a fulsome @POTUS statement ready to issue as soon as he passed away. A simple symbolic task, with no downside at all, to acknowledge the pain of many Americans who regarded Lewis as a hero...
..The fact that no WH statement on the death of @repjohnlewis has yet been issued raises questions. Incompetence? Malevolence? Would Trump have responded differently than Ike, JFK and LBJ to the civil rights movement in the late 50s and early 60s?

As the USA crosses 100,000 recorded covid-19 deaths, many people are incorrectly equating that figure to the estimated 100,000 dead in the 1968 pandemic and wondering why the world didn’t stop then. But it’s apples and oranges, folks….
The 100,000-number for 1968 is an after-the-fact excess mortality figure, not deaths recorded in hospitals. The 1968 pandemic was relatively mild, as many people had immunity because of the 1957 pandemic. Hospital deaths were much lower than 100,000...
Similarly, the 2009 swine flu pandemic is now estimated to have caused 12,500 deaths. That’s SIX times higher than recorded hospital deaths. So when the people read about this pandemic in history books 50 years from now, they will see a much higher number....

Speaking today with friends in Germany, it's amazing to hear how quick and efficient financial relief has been there. They knew someone who applied online for help last week, and within six days their friend received 12,000 Euros ($13,000) in their bank account.
On top of that, because Germany immediately took action to deal with the virus and has managed to keep death rates low, hospitals have excess hospital beds and have begun accepting critically-ill covid-19 patients from Italy and Spain to relieve the burden in those countries.
My friends also noted (proudly) that Germany had worked hard since the 2009 financial crisis to reduce its government-debt-to-GDP ratio in preparation for the next possible crisis.

This comment by Fauci is puzzling because Italy halted all flights to/from China on Jan. 31, days before Trump. It was even broader than the US ban. I have contacted NIH to clarify, but here's the Italian announcement --> enac.gov.it/news/coronavir…
More: The Italian ban was complete, no flights, no exceptions. Trump's action let airlines keep flying, with restrictions that contained wide exemptions. thelocal.it/20200131/italy…
