A big opportunity landed in our laps and was immediately shut down by “the industry”. Here’s the story...
Some dope homies we know in a bigger, more well-known band had a connect with a major streaming platform through their label.
They’re cis dudes who make kickass music. It’s crunchy, loud and fast, similar in style right, but more “palatable”
And when we say palatable, we all know what that means. Less offensive to white folks. Let’s be honest right.
Anyway. They hit us up as a fam band who understands our struggle and to really boost our music in a big way.
@GreenDay had just put our song “Call The Cops” on their Black Lives Matter playlist, more bands we’re talking about #BlackMusicMatters and finally giving platform to hella black artists.
Major corporations, including twitter, was on their “Black Lives Matter” shit for a little window so it would seem like this opportunity, unlike others, would really happen.
So they wrote this amazing thing about the importance of uplifting Black art and spotlighted Call The Cops/The Muslims as part of this huge project.
(because of how fucked up the industry is, we are not naming the band or platform because we don’t want to fuck up their money/connects and what not)
Long story short: this label straight up changed their message and WOULD NOT spotlight our song, Call The Cops. They would not spotlight our band.
Y’all, this is one platform and one project they were doing for #BlackMusicMatters and legit refused to uplift a Black and brown, queer Muslim punk band, esp a band talking about police brutality.
Different instance: I was personally contacted by @MTV to be featured in one of their programs and after days and days of filming, invading my personal life for this thing, they dropped it bc it was too political.
(and I tagged their ass bc fuck them and it was separate from this shit with our fam bands)
These are two of many examples where we were actively silenced for being “too political”. For speaking truth to power. For keeping it fucking real about our experiences!
Sometimes it doesn’t matter how good your music is, how good your promotion game is or how spot-on the content is. If you’re black or brown, or challenging the status quo, you will be actively blocked from glowin up.
