The Journal sent one of its own to do a human interest story on why Nazis joined the New Mexico Civil Guard. It spilled ink trying to humanize white supremacists who felt misunderstood giving them a platform to crack KKK jokes about hoods and burning crosses.
Neither the cops nor the NMCG stopped Steven Baca from violently assaulting women at the Oñate protest. NMCG didn’t stop him from shooting Scott Williams. In fact, they protected Baca and later applauded him as “our guy.”
Prior to the shooting, APD referred to the NMCG as “heavily armed friendlies” and had coordinated with them to police BLM rallies. So, no, NMCG is not “pretending” to be police when they are actually working with cops to do cop things: that is, terrorize Black and Native people.
White supremacists are not being hunted and captured in the cover of darkness by cops like people suspected of being antifa. Why? Because white militias aren’t a threat to white supremacy. Cops and white militias often overlap and they perform the same function: racial terror.
It’s worth noting the NMCG’s new insignia is a conquistador helmet, a reference to Spanish and European supremacy and genocidal against Natives. Many of these white supremacists have Spanish last names and consider themselves “racial minorities” while invoking their whiteness.
NMCG and white militias are not a “threat” to the status quo. They are the status quo and then some. NMCG is an assortment of right tendencies from Trumpers to Nazis, active military and former cops. They have no coherent ideology other than violence which makes them dangerous.
White militias see themselves as upholding the settler state in the perceived absence of state authority and lawlessness. They hunt antifa and Black and Native people like police do. They form armed groups to “take back” land like their colonizer ancestors that isn’t theirs.
They pose zero threat to the state and they know it. They are the vigilante arm of the state who galvanize both it’s organized and spontaneous forms of racial terror. The cops are just the “legitimate” form of racial terror that protect ruling class interests.
