(1/n) Excited to share #Pufferfish an open-source full-feature mechanical ventilator reference design capable of volume & pressure control with assist modes, both invasive/non-invasive ventilation & features necessary to support COVID19 patients pez-globo.org
(2/n) Pufferfish is a result of a large scale intl collaborative effort - Pez-Globo - between my lab @Stanford, @brownengin @FluidDanamics & @UofU_Anesthesia @kkuck - clinicians, engineers, scientists, industrial/manufacturing partners @BharatForgeLtd @Waymo @BlackrockMicro
(3/n) Heart of whole operation are students, postdocs, clinicians, innovators & volunteers - working with tenacity, precision & passion I have never witnessed before - too many to name individually (list pez-globo.org/core-team) - spreading across US, India, Nepal and Kenya
(4/n) We began as a small group @hongquan_li @anesta_k @deepak_me90 @ethanLi at Stanford collaborating with @UofU_Anesthesia @kkuck lab when we shared first pre-print [DOI:2020.04.18.20070367] vimeo.com/437316595
(5/n) I was so delighted to learn an old friend @brownengin @FluidDanamics working on similar approach... with BrunO2 project sites.brown.edu/bruno2/ - we merged efforts to scale-up & match the scope & ambition building a reference design of full-feature ventilator.
(6/n) In the world where innumerable ventilator designs have been shared - we strongly feel need for solutions that clinicians would actually want to use. We have put an immense effort on usability. Example, Jim Agutter of @UofUCAP and his team helped build UI/UX & training prog.
(7/n) We have focused on designing a ventilator that does not depend on medical supply chains that are still jammed - to design a touch-screen based ventilator that can be manufactured globally. We always focus on cost (first batch we have a BOM of ~$600) vimeo.com/437360854
(8/n) We have been transferring knowledge to partners from day one. We partnered early to bring international teams - so proud of @BharatForgeLtd Innovation Center Nepal, Kenya association of manufacturers in our mix. We have been busy shipping prototypes across the world
(9/n) The joy of #Pufferfish prototypes breathing all across the world and knowledge shared across the globe in hours teaches us new ways of enabling global innovation for life saving technologies...
(10/n) Lets build a world on the foundation of openness and collaboration - with shared ownership and wisdom. This disease does not discriminate and affects everyone - why not build solutions together that would be equally accessible to everyone on the planet.
(11/n) As we are transitioning to submitting regulatory framework in multiple countries, today we are releasing version "0" (prototype) reference design for anyone excited to engage. Find detailed documentation at project wiki notion.so/pufferfish/Pez…
(12/n) I want you to understand, designing an actually usable ventilator in such a short period of time is hard - just try to imagine the number of real world situations to account for (cough cough)... vimeo.com/437316817
(13/n) We are so grateful to clinicians (like Brian Daniels, UCSF David Gaba, Dan Dworkis, India/Kenya/Nepal clinicians) who answer every question patiently - while taking care of COVID patients everyday. They are our heroes - possibly my fav picture for the whole project!
(14/n) If you want to see and follow the true spirit of this project - head out to updates page at pez-globo.org/newsupdates where we share what happens on a daily basis.
(15/n) We are still looking for financial support to allow us to engage with ever larger number of teams globally. As numbers in global south keep increasing simultaneously; this has become a harsh reality. If you have the means, considering supporting us pez-globo.org/donate
(16/n) IMPORTANT: #Pufferfish is not an approved medical device as yet. We are working hard to get our FDA EUA submission. If you have experience working on regulatory processes both in US or internationally & supporting small teams - please write <pezglobo.pufferfish@gmail.com>
(17/n) In this short thread - I could not cover any of the technical innovations in #pufferfish, how we are planning on tackling O2 shortage, black-outs, high altitude operations & more - that is for another day...
(18/n) As cases keep rising in US, India, Brazil .. we all still need to hold on to hope. Whenever we are tiered of the long hours - we look at mountains that we still need to climb - knowing the view from the above is worth the fight. Hello world - let's not give up and fight!
