A THREAD about @mattgaetz, insult comedy, and misogyny. Let me share with you a photo of the tweet in question, and note that as of this thread, it's still up. 1/
It's clear to me that what he's insinuating here is that AOC is f**king members of congress. Now I get it; it might not read that way to you. But let's break it down. If you're not a comedian, for example, you might not pick up on the obvious insult comedy structure here. 2/
This is a common joke structure. Imagine Rodney Dangerfield saying "I met Sinatra who said he used to date my wife. He said she was a nag that couldn't cook. I said 'watch it, bub. She can cook.'" That's a common insult structure insinuating she's a nag. 3/
It's like the bait and switch joke structure where you show a side-by-side photo of trump and a Diaper Genie with the caption "One of these is a repository for shit that you relegate to a corner of your house and try to avoid, and the other is a Diaper Genie." 4/
These are very common joke structures easily recognized by comics, and if you use them, your joke has to be clever (or more funny than offensive) or you'll be labeled a "hack". If you're not a comic, it's understandable you might not pick up on these common structures. 5/
Likewise, if you're a cis man, you might not pick up on instances of misogyny because you're not inundated with them on a daily basis. This doesn't make you stupid. Just like me not understanding what it's like to be a cis man doesn't make me stupid. Just not my experience. 6/
Just like if you're not a comic, you might not be able to recognize a hack joke. Both of those are at play in Matt Gaetz' tweet. You have the "Sinatra called my mom a nag that can't cook, but she can cook" structure, and the misogyny. 7/
In this tweet, Matt is saying "Yoho called AOC a f**king b*tch, but she's not a b*tch" AND you have the misogyny of what he's insinuating: "She gets along with many of her GOP colleagues on things that don't have anything to do with legislation or politics." 8/
What's the other thing she "gets along with her colleagues" about that ISN'T politics or legislation? The second part of the dropped insult. As a woman and a comic, it's obvious what he's insinuating. I've seen both elements enough times to pick up what he's putting down. 9/
And just think about this. It's Matt Gaetz. What's more likely: that he's a hack misogynist asshole, or that he defends the "damsel in distress"? And if my lived experiences aren't enough to convince you, is either scenario okay? END/
PS: I realize a lot of you think I’m bananas, but read his tweet in Rodney Dangerfield’s voice and put some stank on it. Maybe even do that thing where he loosens his tie. You’ll see what I mean.
