I think a lot of the things that bother people about Trump come down to his pathological lack of empathy -- and I don't only mean his cruel statements/policies, I mean even his physical bearing & appearance and the rhythm & tenor of his speech.
Like the weird way he reads a written speech -- it reflects a simple inability to "inhabit" the voice of the speechwriter, put himself in their shoes, express things from their perspective. He sounds like he's reading a foreign language b/c to him other perspectives ARE foreign.
Or the way he interacts with children. It is deeply, deeply creepy. There's just no spark of recognition at all. They are of no use to him, he can't exploit them to advance his interests, so he treats them like confusing, wriggly objects. 
In contrast, look at these pictures: in almost every one, Obama is "mirroring" (as psychologists call it) the child's emotional state back at them. It's the fundamental way children connect & learn. But it requires empathy! businessinsider.com/obama-birthday…
It's hard not to think that lots of Trump's older male fans recognize their own lack of emotional literacy in him. And he treats it like a virtue, a strength, which gives them permission to do the same. (Rather than, say, work on it in order to have decent relationships.)
