The arrests of Ohio Speaker of the House Larry Householder, former chairman of the Ohio GOP Matthew Borges, and several of their associates in an alleged $60 million racketeering conspiracy—
which the U.S. Attorney called “likely the largest bribery, money-laundering scheme ever perpetrated against the people of Ohio”—are astonishing.
While Ohioans faced evictions, closed factories, and rationing essential medication to pay for HB6’s increases to their electric bills, Householder and his co-conspirators allegedly cashed in the public trust for payments on the Speaker's Florida home and to buy power.
This is not law and order; this is corruption and chaos. When people say they distrust their government, this is why. Their cynicism is born from the corruption of those sworn to represent their interests.
We don’t know how far this goes but every public servant needs to be crystal clear on whose side they are on: special interests or citizens.
.@RepDaveJoyce, always quick to tout his history as a prosecutor, ought to be well familiar with the legal terms ‘shocking to the conscience’ and ‘appearance of impropriety’.
To allay any and all implications of impropriety related to this shocking breach of the public trust perpetrated by members of the Ohio GOP, I call on @RepDaveJoyce to immediately return all $38,000 in campaign contributions Joyce has taken from FirstEnergy over his career.
I also call on @RepDaveJoyce to immediately co-sponsor H.R.1, the For the People Act of 2019 to prove a commitment to fighting the poisonous effects of dark money in politics, so starkly exemplified by his GOP colleagues.
