My research on the representation of race and skin tone in medical textbooks is discussed in the @washingtonpost | @PRBA_ISR @SandyDarity @ASAnews @sydneypage95 @malone_mk @theyoungjoo @DrSlaughter99 @Adolfocuevas01
We find that 74.5% of images in preclinical anatomy textbooks represent light skin tones. Link to article in @socscimed (SSM) here: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
The absence of dark skin tone is particularly important in instances where a disease presents differently based on the patients’ skin tone. We use the example of skin cancer.
But other examples include purpura, kawasaki disease, and erythema migrans. @OgunyemiMD @malone_mk @LashNolen
We also argue that skin tone might matter in other cases. If doctors associate particular racial groups with certain diseases, then minority patients who present with the same symptoms might be misdiagnosed due to assumptions about race and disease risk. @DorothyERoberts
