THREAD: Remember that claim that a Corbyn supporter was thrown out of the Labour Party for liking the Foo Fighters? It turns out it wasn't true, and the Labour Party knew it wasn't true but kept telling people it was true anyway. John Ware has the scoop. But who fell for it?
It was regularly cited as the prime example of right wingers in Labour HQ abusing their powers to purge the left. The Daily Mail and Guardian reported it as fact.
Momentum and Jon Lansman used it to recruit supporters
The Canary printed it in at least three different articles
Jonathan Cook cited it in an article published by Middle East Eye and Jewish Voice for Labour
Owen Jones, Rachael Swindon and Michael Rosen all joined in
All the people who signed this letter in the Guardian fell for it
Even the music press couldn't resist
The problem is, it was completely untrue. A Labour member was suspended for Islamophobic tweets but their suspension notice mistakenly cited Facebook rather than Twitter, and they wrongly assumed that it must have been their Foo Fighters post that got them in trouble. That's it.
According to John Ware's @JewishChron article, the Labour Party knew this in 2016 but were still claiming it to be true in 2019. And that's how fake news works /END thejc.com/comment/opinio…
