Defender Europe 20 is the first outing for the US Army's Trophy active protection system. It is visible fitted to this M1A2 sep V2, as are the mounting racks for the ARAT ERA tiles. Note the chunky armour on the front of the turret.
The ARAT was fitted by military police for the first time every apparently. Both the ARAT and Trophy are geared towards countering ATGM/RPG type threats. This pic gives a good view of the Trophy installation on the side of the turret.
The focus on ATGMs and RPGs is an interesting one. A presentation by Ukrainian scientists earlier this year showed that the single greatest cause of AFV losses in Ukraine was artillery. Accounting for more losses than IEDs, ATGMs and Tanks combined.
I think in one respect this might actually show the efficacy of ERA when fitted to Ukrainian tanks. This slide showed the ability of Nizh ERA to resist attacks. And other reports indicate that T-64s would lose most ERA tiles during combat.
However, this image shows the effects of a 125 HE-FRAG round on a T-64. The Ukrainian personnel also cited UAVs carrying hand grenades with shaped charges as threats, pointing to their use in Iraq and Ukraine.
War is of course about calculated and managed risk. It is impossible to protect against everything and vehicles will be destroyed in any conflict. I only wonder whether ATGMs are the main threat to NATO armour, as opposed to some form of area denial with artillery.
And one final thing on those Trophy images, since few seemed to have noticed it. That low-loader is one of the new M1300s, which have been re-baselined from the M1070A1s. They can carry 75 tonnes and are now road legal in Europe.
The US Army is procuring 170 of the M1300s so that it can move its heavy vehicles around the continent without relying on partner nations for this vital capability. As usual, success is about how equipment gets to a place, as well as a host of other factors.
