As many as 38 MANPAD missiles were fired on IAF aircraft on their first day of action during Kargil. Some say MAWS is not so useful on fighter aircraft. Truth is we still lost a great pilot, Sqn Ldr Ahuja with his MiG-21MF who went out to look for Flt Lt Nachiketa. (1) Image
The first one to sustain a hit, was a Canberra, piloted by Wg Cdr Perumal. He safely landed the aircraft back, with only 1 engine working. While I agree, for most BVR engagements, MAWS doesn't matter. Because by the time the missile enters the detection range of the MAWS... (2)
,the rocket motor has already burnt off, and you only get a warning on your RWR when the missile pitbulls (i.e. if it's an ARH AAM). These missile are usually low on energy and can be dodged if not too close. But in WVR engagements, with modern HOBS AAMs...(3)
MAWS is what will keep a pilot and his aircraft in air. Even milliseconds are crucial when you're in a knife fight. The threat also remains relevant to all strike aircraft which are eventually going to bomb enemy infantry and armoured columns while staying low. (4)
That was 1999. 2 decades later, with so many Chinese options available to them, the availability (per soldier) would have only increased. (5)

Most of you guys would know that this PAF propaganda movie called Sher Dil was released in 2019. I found out something interesting. Apparently PAF & ISPR "Ghazis" were too lazy to vet out some confidential information in this scene which you can see in their YouTube video. Image
In this scene, a PAF fighter controller calls out a hot scramble and directs 2 PAF JF-17s towards 2 hostile IAF Mirage 2000s which have violated Pakistani airspace. Take a close look at the radar display console.
The toolbar to the left has tabs like trace, plot, etc. The map looks fairly accurate, and so does the radar symbology. Accurate markings, genuine looking numbers and gibberish. Overall it looks exactly like an actual RDC should. Image

Precisely. The problem is that while our forces want to enjoy the luxury & flexibility of a home"grown" system, that's inexpensive with the ability to add, subtract, modify and build upon in future, they aren't exactly willing to get involved in the maturing of the system. (1)
They want the product to be able to fire all the weapons available in the IAF's inventory, to have every system that the IAF currently uses, and even more. To have all the latest bells and whistles. But apparantly, they don't want to put the time & investment to do so. (2)
They want a product that's "battle tested", already mature, and home"grown" at the same time. If by that they mean that only a dozen of LSP aircraft flying and getting improved, then it wouldn't ever work, not in this life. (3)

While the guided HPV shooting down a cruise missile is a grt achvmnt, what's bigger is the Advanced Battle Management System (ABMS) used by USAF in this test. Data from various sensors, satellites, ground based radars, AWACS, fighters, etc is combined together into (1)
a picture of the battlefield. Then the AI detects and decides what equipment can be given the task to shoot down the cruise missile. This is definitely the way forward and removes any sort of communication delay between the command and the troops. Information is processed (2)
instantly, and will lessen chances of fratricide by a big margin. Will also ensure a better management and use of resources and increase the pK as far as taking down a target is concerned. (3)

So, I tried to paint a rough ground picture of the region around the LAC on a topographical map.

IA has taken a lot of pre-emptive actions and occupied multiple peaks (accross Indian perception of LAC), surrounding the Chinese posts and tank positions, acting as a direct threat.
We have climbed up on crucial peaks like Magar hill and Gurung hill which can keep a watch on the Spanggur gap from top. Our tanks face PLA tanks and Moldo post, with the Chushul ALG & Indian posts behind them. We have also gained Black top and helmet top.
From these positions, IA troops can keep a watch on every surrounding path of the Chinese armour and posts, with eyes on the opposite side of the F-4 area of Pangong Tso. It's a chakravyuh which has surrounded their posts. There's no running away.

While the system is potent, in a clutter free environment, an alert IN warship would be easily able to detect a sea-skimming missile at around 35-40km range. We would have a good 2-3 minute time period to launch Barak-8s in salvo to intercept the AShM (1)
And prepare the AK-630M CIWS for endgame interception, that is, if the Barak-8 misses the AShM which is highly unlikely. Subsonic missiles are at a heavy disadvantage when engaging a modern vessel equipped to defend against it. (2)
On the other hand, for interception of BrahMos, the time frame to react would be reduced to only around 30 seconds in an ideal scenario. Tracking and launching would easily take 10-12 seconds, making it difficult for the SAMs to intercept a M2.8 capable BrahMos. (3)

I was able to shoot some photos from today's flypast. These were probably the lowest they have ever flown over my house. Image
