So @MLB and the @Dodgers tried to miss the #TakeAKnee problem by having a special “take a knee” ceremony. They do it at a different time from the Anthem. I applaud their efforts and the support of @Blklivesmatter But something doesn’t quite ring true.
Protests are necessarily uncomfortable. When you put them in a box or deconstruct them so they’re not uncomfortable anymore, you TAKE AWAY their power. If @MLB and the @Dodgers are truly allies, they need to GIVE power.
If @mookiebetts kneels during the Anthem and you remain standing, you’re effectively saying, “Man this is tough for you. I hope this ends someday.” You put your hands on his shoulders. Good for you. But he’s still down there kneeling. Alone.
There is no more apt representation of the past 100 years of civil rights than a Black player kneeling while his white friends stand around above him. We need to get down there to show he’s got allies... That he’s not alone in this fight.
White folk gotta kneel. During the Anthem. It’s not gonna be easy. It’s outside of norms. Don’t think of it as a protest. It’s just an acknowledgement that there’s some wrongs that need fixing. You’re down there to help him fight. It’s what friends-It’s what Americans- do
