/Thread on journalism and random acts of kindness.
After this was published in @HuffPostCanada and @NewCdnMedia - a reader contacted me and asked if he could send Aya a gift for school. It arrived yesterday.
/ Here’s Aya’s reaction after opening the gift. It was her own Chromebook! And Michael, the confidential donor also sent a second laptop for the family to use!
/ For me - this was reaffirmation, that people care about these stories of newcomers and are seeking ways to help. And it was also a professional boost of energy. Journalism can sometimes feel like unrequited love.
/ Reading comments on immigration / refugee stories can be a soul-destroying exercise. I’m always shocked by the words of hate and “othering.” But commenting is easy. Buying a computer for a stranger’s family - that’s a belief in better angels and act of faith in humanity.
/ Thanks again Michael. Aya aspires to become a journalist, here’s hoping she’ll write about your gift one day. -30- newcanadianmedia.ca/girl-interrupt…
