It's always the same playbook as Ronald Reagan in the 60s, running for governor against "that mess at Berkeley" and claiming "I didn't leave the Democratic Party. The party left me."
(And that moment is crucial, because it's when the modern GOP developed out of Goldwater-Reagan-Nixon, and began a half-century process of destroying the parts of the GOP that valued expertise, academia, and the humanities)
