The evocative ruins of Fountains Abbey, one of the best preserved medieval monasteries in Britain. Constructed in the 12th century for a breakaway group of Cistercian "White Monks", it became one of the wealthiest monasteries in England until its dissolution in 1539.
The 300-foot-long vaulted 'cellarium' or storehouse is an incredible 12th century survival, its state of preservation unrivalled in medieval British architecture.
The Refectory of Fountains Abbey on the banks of the River Skell. The monastery was constructed in the idyllic river-valley with the waters used for powering mills, brewing and farming.
The 350-foot-long aisled nave of Fountains Abbey completed by 1160 AD, surviving almost to its full height with sturdy pillars of locally-hewn sandstone.
The Cloisters of Fountains Abbey from which all the essential buildings of monastic life could be accessed, such as the church, refectory, chapter house and dormitories.
