Newsflash: Fox News may be helping destroy Trump's reelection chances. Fox is persuading Trump that his leadership is crushing coronavirus, that his crackdowns on protests showcase his great strength, and that he's winning arguments he's losing. New piece:

In the Fox narrative, voters crave Trump's hyper-militarized crackdowns and his Mt. Rushmore speech is the greatest oratory since Cicero.

But in this telling, there's no room for acknowledgment that Trump is widely seen as an inciting, destructive force:

College educated whites trust Biden over Trump *on crime and safety* by 52-40. Among college white women, that's 58-37 (!).

And more suburbanites say USA will be *less* safe if Trump wins (48) than say that about Biden (37).

Let's be clear: Trump is now trying to scare seniors who rightly fear getting killed by the pandemic he disastrously screwed up into instead fearing death from criminals in a Biden police-free dystopia that's entirely invented. But it's failing. New piece:

Trump is using law enforcement to manufacture a campaign lie about Biden. He told us so himself, straight from the Oval Office! This is what got him impeached: Manipulating govt to invent Biden smears. In both cases, his own TV ads confirm the point.

Here's a great point from former DHS official @juliettekayyem: There's zero operational justification for Trump's use of federal law enforcement this way.

This is especially true, given that state and local officials are opposed to what Trump is doing:

@juliettekayyem Another point: Not enough is being made of the fact that Trump *explicitly* said the cities getting targeted by federal law enforcement are "all run by Democrats."

As @anneapplebaum says, this is "performative authoritarianism." It's also self-damning.
