In pre-Islamic Arabia as in most places in the world, polytheism was common. Arab polytheism, the dominant belief system, was based on the belief in deities, Gods & Goddesses as in Hinduism. Gods & goddesses were worshipped at local shrines, such as the Kaaba in Mecca.
Throughout it's history, even in Muhammads time, Muslims destroyed temples & built Mosques over the site to worship in. 10's of thousands of temples were destroyed in India, their pieces used to construct Islamic mosques, Dargahs, Ziarats, Sarais, Mazars etc
The practice is as old as Islam. Destroy their Temples, schools, libraries, culture, heritage, replace with Islam.

So the next time ISIS, Al Qaeda, or any of the other hundreds of Islamic terrorist groups existing in our world today destroys another temple or sacred site & so called moderate Muslims tell you, that's not Islam, know they're lying. It is exactly what Islam has always done.
