Last week I spoke with the ladies of @TheRedWhine about back to school. Most of our focus was on the kids and how they need to be back to routine, but I do get why teachers know it will be awful to go back this way. facebook.com/1323518432/pos…

So I guess as an extension of that convo, what I’m suggesting is the biggest problem, pretty much as always, w/public schools is out of touch bureaucracy, teachers unions, & entities making decisions based on “amything but kids.”

A little “and furthermore”

a) I don’t even think public school is the best “normal” to get back to for every kid. Many public schools (mostly talking elem level, my wheelhouse)...

are great & many teachers are fantastic (there are also some GREAT school level admins!) But much of the system needs reform and most importantly, less bureaucracy. It also needs more competition through private schools, charters, homeschooling options.

Families need more choices (especially lower income families) and the dollars should be tied to the kid, not the property/geography. More “nontraditional” schools, vouchers and traveling funding, less admin control & costs. At the very least.

b) There are several great follows for #SchoolChoice issues on Twitter but if I had to pick 1 it would be @DeAngelisCorey, on #Homeschooling it’s @bethanyshondark. (And you know they’re good because I’m famously indecisive.)

c) Re: school closures/social distancing, I heard a great ep of @michaelmalice “Your Welcome” a while back. It might blow your mind.

Anyhoo, this sucks, w/no perfect answers. I fear we’re doing more harm than good on many levels. Teachers: good luck & go get em. Parents: I feel for you, keep doing your best. Kids: I want to hug you and tell you it’ll all be ok and this too shall pass. 💞
