Natural history collections are ideally and uniquely poised to teach data literacy, biodiversity science acumen and 21st century workforce skills #biome20
The use of specimens and data in the classroom facilitate active and experiential learning, provides an opportunity to experience the data lifecycle and a gateway to biodiversity science and more! #biome20
Goals of the BLUE Data network @BiodiversityEd include cultivating a diverse an inclusive network, define core biodiversity data literacy competencies, develop materials and extend the network to engage a broader community of undergrad educators #biome20
Now moving into course based undergraduate research experience where students ask their own questions and use the databases, tools and present their results #biome20
BLUE Resources can be found here biodiversityliteracy.com #biome20
Additional life science data resources can be found here libguides.cmich.edu/lifesciencedat… #biome20
Breaking out into sessions to learn more, looking at Data is the New Science module #biome20
Students use @iDigBio to look at specimen data and then go to gbif.org to get occurrence data. Great way to introduce students to different databases. #biome20
So, how do you assess these activities? Problem based learning exercise where they look at a real research project using the same skill sets and drawing off the same concept. Great model for authentic assessment! #biome20
Several modules of interest to me - Data ethics, louse genetics, data visualization, and communicating with data. These cross many disciplines, taught through a biodiversity lens. Def going to check these out! #biome20
Great workshop on using BLUE @BiodiversityEd for all kinds of work with real data that includes well designed modules you can easily adopt/adapt. For those instructors looking for some new #onlineactivities for fall, check them out! #biome20 @BioQUESTed @qubeshub
Thank you very much to Anna Monfils and Debra Linton for a great workshop on BLUE @BiodiversityEd here at #biome20 A call for a paleo module or other ideas, contact them. @StellarSquirrel is also a great person to connect with if you want to learn more!
