This is ridiculous dishonesty from Republican negotiators.

Let's get a few things clear.

This is happening because when House Democrats passed an extension ten weeks ago Senate Republicans said they needed a "pause." Then they didn't do a single thing until it was too late. 1/
Then they introduced a bill that is terrible, stupid, and unworkable. Even the Republicans hate their own bill, there is nearly universal agreement that it is bad policy.

Enormous cuts to unemployment benefits in the middle of a pandemic are heartless! 2/
The Republicans are playing with the lives of 30 million people not to mention the recovery of the entire US economy and their logic is HORRIBLE.

McConnell is refusing to negotiate over protecting corporations from lawsuits that aren't even happening: 3/ politico.com/news/2020/07/2…
The cuts to unemployment benefits they are demanding will cost an estimated 3 million jobs and blow an enormous hole in the recovery with a huge gent in GDP.

There is widespread agreement among economists that making this cuts will hurt the economy. 4/
And they say we have to make these cuts because unemployment is so generous it will cause people to stay home. Again: there is widespread evidence that this isn't happening very much! Certainly not enough to justify tanking the whole economy over. 5/ news.yale.edu/2020/07/27/yal…
And the proposal the Republicans finally came up with to make unemployment benefits more "fair" could take FIVE MONTHS for states to put in place. Their bill only even authorizes the program to continue for FOUR MONTHS.

This is insanely bad policy! 6/ bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
No exaggeration: people are going to go hungry, get evicted, or lose their homes because Republicans are obsessed with the idea that people *might* get paid more to stay home than they did at work -- even if that obsession means wrecking the economy. 7/ wsj.com/articles/is-60…
*these
They did this and we cannot fix it unless they allow some amount of reality and empathy to penetrate the shield of cynicism in which they've shrouded themselves.

We don't have time for these destructive games -- just extend unemployment benefits now. 8/8 huffpost.com/entry/coronavi…
