Former SF + South SF Kaiser Security here, and I’m about to tell you why you need to RUN from this position. Don’t even think about it please.

Some context: I was hired in San Francisco Geary Kaiser, and I was lead dispatcher over every Kaiser in San Francisco. Then I was promoted to Kaiser South San Francisco to be Emergency Department Specialist, so I know this company.
He didn’t lie, the pay is $25-$30 an hour, I started at $26 and it only goes up from there. But when you sign this contract, they own you. They entirely disregard the schedule you signed up for.
My schedule was supposed to be simply Monday-Friday 08:00am-04:00pm. I thought it was the American Dream, I was so happy with that.
But nah. They move your schedule to whatever they want. Which can consistently be Monday-Sunday 04:00am-08:00pm. No life.
Now here’s where it gets REAL ugly. Keep in mind, Securitas works for almost EVERY Kaiser Hospital in California. So these same rules apply all throughout. Security officers have some intense rules, but none as intense as this:

Only 3 sick days per year. No exception.
In April, I had a COVID scare. Was rushed to the E.R, and advised to take a lengthy duration off work. I only took 4 days, a small fraction of Dr recommendation, and went back to work even tho I was sick. Thankfully COVID negative, but still diagnosed with an infectious disease.
Upon my return, I had some forms waiting for me. In summary, it says “you can’t take any more time off until March 2021. If you’re sick again, you’re fired.”
Although confused why I received a write-up for not returning to work with a fever and cough during the peak of COVID and against physicians advice, I had to agree to their contract. The next month, I worked hard in the E.R not taking a single day off.
My new schedule at this point was Monday-Friday 04:00am-04:00pm, 12 hours a day, 60 hours a week in the Emergency Room, frequently having to literally fight and restrain COVID positive patients. And escorting every single COVID patient from the ER to their new private room.
So yeah, needless to say I was a high-risk person. My exposure rate was extremely high, with nothing but a thin mask- not even an N95, gown, or anything. Just my normal Security Uniform going face to face with COVID with less than 2 feet distance.
In May, I got sick again. It was a Friday, I called my manager and asked for advice after giving them my symptoms. The advice I got was “Well I better see you here at 04:00am because you know you’re out of sick time until next year.”
I tried to be strong all night and self-heal, with my wife by my side urging me to go the hospital. I denied because I knew I would spend the night, and that means missing work and getting fired.
Once it was time to go to work, I was in much worse condition, and physically unable to drive myself to work. I had to call work again and tell them I’m sorry but I can’t go to work today. I took that Friday off, and returned to work on Monday.
I returned, and everything was normal for a few days, but one day they called me into the office and had several forms on the table. Most notably this statement they asked me to write to justify my absence.
In summary, they didn’t like my justification. They didn’t like that I was too sick to work during the peak of COVID, and frequently reminded me that we’re only allowed 3 days. Anything after 3 days in a year is not allowed, including COVID related absence.
I provided every single supplementing form necessary to prove that I was extremely ill, and both times displayed severe COVID symptoms. Yet each time, they said it was entirely inexcusable and I was in violation of company policy for not showing up.
Then came the letter of suspension.... They sent me home with no pay and said they were going to evaluate my case with upper management, because I didn’t show up to work in Kaiser E.R with COVID symptoms.
They evaluated my case, and a few days laters I got this in the mail- notice of termination. Securitas terminated a veteran employee for not showing up to Kaiser E.R while severely sick.
Securitas is contracted for almost all Kaiser Permanente’s in California. Please protect Kaiser patients by spreading the word. #BoycottSecuritas. They are a great threat to public safety and our hospitals.
I’m happy to answer any questions about this in the comments or dm’s, it would be extremely helpful to get traction on my gofundmepage too- it’s been hard out here for a family of 3 and one sole provider losing their job out of no where. gofundme.com/f/wrongful-ter…
