One of the happiest sight on these islands is kids out and about engaged in play. So important for their cognitive, emotional and physical development. This is the joy and opportunities taken from them when islands are developed without nature parks and play areas. Image

Pandanus leaves that have done it's job. The leaves will decay providing the plant much needed nutrients. Image

Woman at work. The coconuts will be sold and the palm leaves will be turned into tatch. It is a long walk home. It is these livelihood activities that puts food on the table for these families. Pls don't separate families from the natural environment. Image

Boashi, Magoo, Boakashikeyo and Kuredhi. The first line of defence on our islands. Protect the heylhis. Establish and enforce EPZs. ImageImageImageImage
Iron wood (kuredhi): these hardy salt-resistant plants are protecting the shore from the waves and erosion. Image
Saw some maakanaa nests here. So mesmerising. Mangroves are very fascinating ecosystems for the observant eyes. Image
And the circle of life continues. This decay will provide much-needed humus for the vegetation. Image
Kandoo and iron wood forms the heylhi by this mangroves. Image
There is something really soothing about a stroll through the Kuredhi groves. Image

Woah. The lagoon has gotten very choppy. Bracing for the rain. Home is 1.5hrs away.
Guguri gui (Nostoc commune) or star jelly.
Contrary to popular belief these do not fall from sky with thunder but grows/revive when moist/with rain.
It can fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and also photosynthesize. Star jelly can remain dormant for long and thrive back. ImageImageImage

Kulhafilla (beach salad) growing in the wild. I have seen people applying fertilizer to grow these in some agricultural islands. Image

Quail grass (Celosia argentea) common in agricultural areas of islands. Didn't see this growing up and I think a lot of the seeds gets imported with geri gui (cow dung. ImageImageImage

The koels and birds are singing. Early morning air is filled with the strong sweet scent of Jasminum sambac (Irudheymaa/Arabian Jasmine). This walk to the harbour is a walk to remember. So peaceful and serene. ImageImageImage
Can you hear the birds? Early morning vibes. So serene and peaceful here in the islands.
