Before Spaniards came, Filipinos already had their own system in their communities. Their "leader" being the Datu (male) who decides for the community and are seen as powerful leaders whom citizens have to obey. Aside from Datu, Babaylans/Katalonan (female) were also powerful. ++
They are consulted by the Datu and are believed to have powers so they are mostly in charge of healing the sick, being a midwife, presiding over ritual offerings and etc. Even though the babaylans have to be women, trans-women babaylans were also common++
