Black August was started in California prisons in the 1970s to honor the lives of Black political prisoners killed by the state.

George Jackson, a member of the Soledad Brother, was murdered on August 21st, 1971 during an act of rebellion against the institution of incarceration and its architects, like Ronald Reagan.

Just a year earlier, on August 7th, 1970, Jonathan Jackson was murdered in a quest to liberate the Soledad brothers, of which his brother, George, was a part.

Revolutionary moments such as the Watts Uprising, Haitian Revolution, Nat Turner Rebellion, Fugitive Slave Law Convention, and March on Washington all happened in August. Also, many revolutionaries such as Marcus Garvey and Fred Hampton were born in August.

There are many reasons to celebrate Black August and we can do so through discipline and sacrifice. We're continuing the Black August legacy by amplifying our history of resistance & creating spaces for Black people to come together in community to recharge the revolution.
