Trae Young is better than Luka Doncic in the clutch, a thread: Image
Before we start the thread, clutch is defined as the last 5 minutes of games, within 5 points. Also, most of the stats I provided are not inclusive of last night’s Mavericks game against the Rockets (Luka was 1-7 in the clutch with 3 TOs I believe).
Trae Young has totaled 118 points in the clutch, which ranks 2nd in the NBA. In the clutch he has shooting splits of 39.3 FG%/34.2 3FG%/81.2 FT%. Luka Doncic has only 63 points in the clutch, on splits of 32.8 FG%/17.6 3FG%/65.2 FT%. Young is much more efficient and productive.
In the clutch, Young holds an oRTG of 94.0 while Doncic has a 95.6 oRTG. However, the defensive end is where the difference is seen. Young, who is regarded as a poor defender, has a 99.2 dRTG in the clutch vs Luka’s 105.9 dRTG. Young steps up defensively when it matters.
PIE (Player Impact Estimate) is a measure of efficiency and impact similar to PER (Player Efficiency Rating). Young has a 21.9 PIE while Luka has a minuscule 13.7 PIE in the clutch. Young ranks 28th among 427 qualified players, while Doncic is ranked 109th.
The Mavericks have seen a massive down fall when it comes to clutch performance. They are ranked 29th league wide in clutch offense, with 94.3 pts per💯possessions. They are also 28th in clutch FT%, at 70.3%. Their 14-22 mark in clutch games is worst among the 16 playoff teams.
Doncic has a big part in this, as the offensive initiator. His 36.9 eFG% in the clutch ranks 67th of 71 players with 25+ FGAs in the clutch. He’s also 6/35 (17%) on clutch 3PTers, which is 37th out of 40 players with 20+ 3FGAs in the clutch.
This site (stats.inpredictable.com) ranks Trae as the clutchest player in the NBA according to multiple stats, while Luka is ranked 38th. Luka’s eFG sees a 10.1% decrease (53.9 to 43.8), while Young’s sees just a 2.7% drop (52.4 to 49.7) from normal to clutch time. Image
In the final minute of the 4Q/OT period, when Young/Doncic’s teams are down 3 or fewer, here are their FG stats.

Trae Young: 3/10 (30%)
Luka Doncic: 0/10 (0%)

Pretty noticeable difference in clutch performance.
That’s the end of the thread. Hopefully I can change your mind. Many believe Luka is the better clutch player because of highlights and he’s considered the better player, but the stats show otherwise. Shoutout @KevinKeneely1 for a majority of these stats! #TrueToAtlanta
